In The Bleak Midwinter

by The Gorstey Lea Street Choir

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow In the bleak midwinter, long ago Angels and archangels may have gathered there Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air But his mother only, in her maiden bliss Worshiped the beloved with a mothers kiss What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb If I were a wise man, I would do my part Yet what I can I give him, give my heart In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow In the bleak midwinter long ago In the bleak midwinter long ago In the bleak midwinter long ago

about

The Gorstey boys take on 'In The Bleak Midwinter' where sleigh bells are mandatory.

Inspired equally by the Peaky Blinders, Phil Spector's 'A Christmas Gift For You' and Simon & Garfunkel.
Initially recorded for a BBC Introducing in the West Midlands session in 2019 alongside versions of The Isley Brothers/Housemartins 'Caravan of Love' and the Fleet Foxes 'White Winter Hymnal' and then dusted down in the summer (yes the summer) of 2021.
Thanks to Alex Noble at the BBC for giving us the impetus to record this.

Recorded @ the Gorstey Shack in Burntwood, Staffordshire with some added electric guitar by the extremely talented Luciano Narcisi from Bristol based Captain Suun & Los Suns.
Mixed by George 'Sleigh Bells' Shilling in deepest Devon.
Mastered by Mark 'Tinsel & Trimmings' Gardener in his OX4 Sound Studio in rural Oxfordshire.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter, long ago

Angels and archangels may have gathered there
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air
But his mother only, in her maiden bliss
Worshiped the beloved with a mothers kiss

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wise man, I would do my part
Yet what I can I give him, give my heart

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter long ago
In the bleak midwinter long ago

The Gorstey Lea Street Choir Burntwood, UK

The Gorstey Lea Street Choir formed one cold winters night in December 2016. Two friends on a life long journey.

Michael first met Russ in 1985, Michael was 15, Russ was 19.

31 years later we have started making music together.

Here are the fruits of our labour, brought to you with realism, hope and in glorious technicolour...
